about

"During our rehearsals for our upcoming Winter Solstice concerts this weekend, I’ve reflected on my long love-affair with the cello. More than any other instrument, besides my own horn, it is cello that has most defined the sound of our Consort throughout these first 50 years.

I fell in love with the cello in Brazil, while living there in the mid-‘60s, through the music of their great composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. He himself was a cellist, and the instrument figures prominently in many of his works. Cello then became the keystone voice for this new ensemble I wanted to form.

The Consort has been graced by three extraordinary, innovative cellists over the years: Richard Bock was the pioneer, during 1968 and 1969, before we lost him to the Buffalo Symphony; then David Darling played through most of the ‘70s; and when David decided to “graduate” to pursue his own solo path, I had the great good fortune to meet, in one of my “soundplay” workshops in Fresno, California, Eugene Friesen. The stars must have been aligned that night, as Eugene and I have now been making music together for 40 years. He has been integral to every Winter Solstice event we’ve done, and this one, of course, will be his 39th. All three of these amazing cellists have been trailblazers, liberating the cello from its classical shackles, exploring new paths for more personal expression on this “queen of instruments.”

I want to share some examples of Eugene’s soulful playing." - Paul Winter
