This is the third album of Paul’s that we’re pulling “from the vault” in the barn here at Living Music HQ and we're making some copies of the original vinyl pressing of it available.
NOTE: Since these vinyls have been sitting sealed in storage for over 30 years, they are not going to be in "mint" condition. However, they will be playable and in "good" condition, especially if the vinyl is cleaned before play.
Concert for the Earth was recorded live at the General Assembly of the United Nations on World Environment Day, June 5th, 1984. This album features a “reunion Consort” of twelve including Susan Osborn and Jim Scott, with the 80-voice Back Bay Choral. During “Wolf Eyes,” 2,000 people joined in what was the UN’s first howl-along chorus.
Paul said about the album, “I feel a close kinship with the United Nations. We are about the same age, and our goals have much in common. Playing in the General Assembly was a milestone of my musical journey, one that began in the early ‘60s when my college jazz sextet made a long tour through 23 countries in Latin America. That experience showed me the path for my life work and gave birth to my commitment to cultural exchange. It led to the founding of the Consort, a new kind of ensemble, blending instruments and traditions from many cultures."
As David Lile, a member of the audience recalls, "When the concert began there came into that chamber a jubilation!!! We sang along, clapped our hands, howled like wolves, and danced in the aisles. I felt the General Assembly Hall truly united in Glorious music and the love for our earth and all living creatures."
This album truly feels like a celebration of unity, which resonates now perhaps even more strongly than ever.

Paul Winter is a seven-time Grammy-winning saxophonist, whose sextet was the first jazz group to perform at the White House in 1962. His second group, the Paul Winter Consort, interweaves sounds from the natural world with classical and ethnic traditions, and the spontaneous spirit of jazz.
