This is an original pressing of the 1968 album "The Winter Consort" that we've pulled "from the vault" in the barn here at Living Music HQ.
"The Winter Consort, originally released by A&M in 1968, features an early iteration of The Paul Winter Consort. The sonic range of musicians on this album was unlike any other group at the time, featuring sax (Paul Winter), cello (Richard Bock), baroque lute (Karl Herreshoff), english horn (Gene Murrow), alto flute (Virgil Scott), bass marimba (Ruth Ben-Zvi), guitar (Gene Bertoncini), drums (Jose Cigno/Leon Rix/Jim Kappes), and bass (John Beal).
The Winter Consort album flips between traditional folk songs with a jazz twist, free improvisation on the Koto scale, an Italian renaissance piece, and everything in-between. When it was released, its enigmatic nature evaded categorization. It was too “out there” for the classical world, too “traditional” for the jazz world, and too “avant-garde” for the pop world. This has always been the legacy of The Consort, which is to experiment with new arrangements and musical combinations that have never been tried before in order to create something wholly new.
This is a prime look into these early years of exploration. It’s a beautiful album that is perfect for short Winter afternoons when the sky seems a crisper shade of blue."

NOTE: The records still have their original wrapping on them. However, there is a manufacturing defect in the top left corner of each one, which is a small hole that has been punched through the cover (but not the records themselves). It will not affect the play quality. We play-tested a few of the records from this batch and they play well.

Paul Winter Litchfield
Paul Winter is a seven-time Grammy-winning saxophonist, whose sextet was the first jazz group to perform at the White House in 1962. His second group, the Paul Winter Consort, interweaves sounds from the natural world with classical and ethnic traditions, and the spontaneous spirit of jazz. Their annual Winter Solstice Celebrations and Earth Mass are among the most popular events in New York. ... more
