Rooted in the traditions of ancient Russian village music, the Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble has dedicated itself to preserving songs that go back perhaps a thousand years. The Consort met the group during a tour of the Soviet Union in 1986, when they performed at a concert at Moscow University. The two ensembles felt an immediate kinship, and through interpreters, talked enthusiastically about creating new music together for a possible album and future tour. Paul Winter sought permission from Melodiya, the Soviet state record company, who agreed to a co-production. In March, 1987 the Consort returned to Moscow to begin writing and recording.
