about

Paul Winter and his consort met the Pokrovsky Ensemble when their two groups shared the stage at a concert at Moscow University in 1986, at the end of their first tour in the then Soviet Union. The Consort was so enthralled by their sound and spirit, that they began exploring possibilities to collaborate. This led to their return to Moscow in the spring of 1987, to record with them their joint album Earthbeat, the first album of original music created by Russians and Americans together. The Ensemble has since become the Consort's “sister group,” touring together throughout the U.S. as well as in Japan, Spain, Israel, and Russia. They have been featured in several of the Consort's solstice events. “Kurski Funk” is based on a traditional song from the Kursk region in southern Russia. The recording of this song from the Consort's Earthbeat album was heard by millions as the theme of the TV show Survivor.
